Did you know the fifth leading cause of death in the United States is due to strokes? Hi, this is Jody Jo.
For those of you who are not familiar with strokes, there’s an an acronym you should remember. It’s called F.A.S.T.
F is for Face drooping. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the smile uneven or lop-sided?
A is for Arm weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to lift both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S is for Speech difficulty. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like “the is sky blue.” Is the person able to correctly repeat the words?
T is for Time. Call 911.
If someone is displaying any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and say “I think this is a stroke” to help get the person to the hospital immediately. Time is important. Don’t delay! To learn more about Strokes, visit KaweahDelta.org
